A FATHER WHO ACTED

Kaylub Giamanco’s two daughters attend Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon.

On October 15, a gunman attacked the school. According to his family, Kaylub was driving nearby when he heard the commotion. He went inside and stopped the attacker. Police credited his actions with saving lives.

Three children and a teacher were killed. That loss belongs in this story too. Families are grieving, and no account of one man’s courage should push them aside.

Kaylub’s family says he isn’t seeking recognition. We can respect his privacy and still honor what he did: he stepped into danger to protect others.

We should pray for the Lord to protect our families. We should also prepare to protect them.

Learn first aid, keep a proper medical kit in your vehicle, and know how to use what’s inside. Carry the basic supplies your family would need if you broke down or got stranded.

Get a firearm, get qualified training. A firearm is useless if you do not know how to use it. Learn to recognize danger, get people to safety, and make sound decisions under pressure.

Buying equipment is only part of preparing. You need the knowledge and practice to use it when someone depends on you.

As men, we have a duty to provide for and protect the people entrusted to us. That work starts while life is quiet—in what we learn, what we practice, and what we keep ready.

Pray for your family. Then look honestly at where you’re unprepared and do something about it.

Live intentionally. Focus eternally.
